The new library was opened on the 23rd april 2006 in this 14th century stately mansion.
The house still retains the original gothic twin windows and on one corner, brackets holding a defensive parapet.
It is located in Constitució Square, 31 and together with Can Rodona, Can Galceran and Can Bartrina forms the gothic centre of the old town.
The Salvador de Plaça family were the chemists of Calella and some family members were well-known throughout 18th century Europe as renowned botanists.
The house was designated council property when it became uninhabited.
The inner courtyard was inaccesible until the renovation and conversion into the site of the new municipal library. The work has been carried out by the architect Jordi Casadevall and site manager Agustí Ordeix.
The courtyard is an oasis of peace and serenity where visitors can relax outdoors reading either books or newspapers. A marked contrast to the hustle and bustle of the town centre making it such an attractive part of the building.
